[PT] Recuando no tempo agora — a primavera dá lugar ao verão e a vida/trabalho na quinta ajusta-se.

Agora que a onda de calor do final de junho abrandou, podemos entrar num bom ritmo.

[ENG] Going backwards in time now—spring turns to summer and the life/work on the quinta adjusts.

Now that the late June heatwave cools off, we can settle into a good rhythm.

[PT] Dia da espiga é uma celebração portuguesa que ocorre no dia da Quinta-feira da Ascensão com um passeio matinal, em que se colhe espigas de vários cereais, flores campestres e raminhos de oliveira para formar um ramo. Segundo a tradição o ramo deve ser colocado por detrás da porta de entrada, e só deve ser substituído por um novo no dia da espiga do ano seguinte.
É também o dia de aniversário da nossa quinta!! Estou muito feliz por estar aqui. Venha visitar-nos em breve!

[EN] Dia da Espiga or Cob Day is a Portuguese celebration that takes place on Ascension Thursday with a morning walk, in which ears of various cereals, wild flowers and olive branches are collected to form a bouquet. According to tradition, the branch must be placed behind the entrance door, and must only be replaced by a new one on the ear of the following year.
It is also our quinta anniversary day!! So happy to be here. Come visit us soon!

[EN] Another opportunity to support and trade with our colleagues at @quintadarminho in Mangualde. They produce a food box subscription service with various greens and fruits, and we supplies pesticide-free cherries...with a trade for their glorious farm fresh eggs!!

We are excited to be a part of a greater farm-to-table food experience, and that bountiful harvests are fully utilized!

[PT] Uma vista aérea tirada há dois anos. Muita coisa mudou; e muita coisa ainda vai mudar. Lá de cima, parece uma quintinha. Lá de baixo, no chão, é quase uma quinta demasiado grande! Mas com o passar do tempo, e à medida que vamos observando do centro para as bordas, desenvolvemos uma boa memória muscular da terra, e a vida aí cedo se torna parte de nós.

[EN] A Birds Eye view taken two years back. Much has changed; so much more will change. It seems like such a little farm from way up there. Down on the ground, it’s just on the edge of a little too much farm! But as time goes on and from the center to the borders we have good observation and build muscle memory of the land, the life soon becomes a part of you.

How many have forgotten the cycle of soil regeneration? How many have never learned? We add our own microbiology to the soil when we work it with our hands. One of many ways we have to also regenerate our selves.

2025 began with the transition to a full-time life

2025 began with the transition to a full-time life on the QdL, as we with positivity handed over the Moinhos do Dão to a new group that themselves brought fresh ideas and excitement. Inspiration was in the air in this shared Dão watershed.

With a loving look on the old and towards the new, the work always comes along and quick, so we got right to it!

We settled right in at the end of winter, and the skies brightened our days with streams of color shouting “here comes the spring!”

And there were immediate challenges, and quite a lot of shedding the things we drag from the past.

But we found moments to celebrate our togetherness in this new home and life, with also our furry companions, and our friends, and more new friends, and good old friends, and super supportive family (and missing those that couldn’t show up…this year at least).

And the result, beyond just the feeling of being? We made juice from the gifts of the land, we made wine, we made sumptuous olive oil!!! This is part of how we must live, to grow and nurture mind and body. All natural!!

Don’t forget to stop and smell the roses!

Question: when is a volunteer on your quinta not a

Question: when is a volunteer on your quinta not a volunteer? Answer: when they, after repeat visits, have become a good friend, just stopping over for quality experiences, both practical and personal...and to test out our new visitors caravan and public kitchen setup before we get official on hosting around here.

And so for 10 days we hosted our buddy Wouter @wouter.tuinstra this recent, late November, for a bit of work and a bit of play. We harvested olives, talked shop about Alan Watts, started building temp windows for the Arteário, played some board games in front of the fireplace, cleaned up a buried trash pile, proof tasted some fresh wine (twice!) and went on a fantastic hike in the Mondego valley!

Too bad Wouter had to go back to work up in A-Town! It’s much more fun to work on the quinta. Hahaha!
